Beginning in 1988, the Masterpieces in Silver series was produced until 2011 in Canberra. This long running coin series is dedicated to Australian events, themes and famous persons that have helped to shape Australia as a nation. The Masterpieces series came in many forms, often with silver plaques and varying numbers of coins. The coins were always produced as proof grade and ship with presentation boxes.

The obverse of the five coins carries the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II created by Ian Rank-Broadley.
The reverse of each coin features a representation of an effigy of Monarchs of Australian coinage.
